About Silvine
Silvine paper products are made by Sinclairs Stationers in Yorkshire. The brand has undergone many changes through the years, but some things will always stay the same. Like the ethical way we do business and our insistence on manufacturing all our stationery right here in the UK.
From Edwardian exercise books to 21st century stationery!
The Silvine trademark was first registered in 1901 – a time when gentlemen wore top hats, ladies’ corsets caused frequent fainting and everything seemed to happen in black and white.
The oldest surviving stationery catalogue we have in our archives, dated 1928, lists a Silvine exercise book and a drawing book. Amazingly, we still make both these products, although they look rather different today.
From the 1950s on, generations grew up using our iconic red Silvine exercise books with the laurel wreath logo on the cover. Do you remember the conversion tables on the back cover? If you’re old enough, you’ll know they were once in ounces and bushels before grammes and metres came along!
In 2008, we completely redesigned our logo and our stationery to bring the Silvine brand bang up to date. But our paper products are still the same high quality as they always have been.
The futures as important as the past
Our stationery factory is based in the ancient market town of Otley, surrounded by the breathtaking countryside of the Yorkshire Dales. It’s not just where we work; it’s where most of us live too. So it’s only natural that we strive to be good neighbours and do all we can to nurture our community.
Not only are we heavily involved in local projects, but we’re also members of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. We go to great lengths to reduce the impact our business has on the environment. Read all about what we’re up to on our sustainability page.
